Drive to Islay in a 4×4 for the ultimate Scottish road trip
For the ultimate Scottish road trip experience, hire a 4×4 camping vehicle and head up to the beautiful isle of Islay. There is so much to see along the way, and you can make as many stops as you like. The journey winds through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the country. Scotland’s wild beauty, from rolling hills and glens to rugged coastlines and island vistas, is best explored with the freedom of a capable vehicle, allowing for detours and scenic stops.
Hiring a 4×4 camping vehicle
We would suggest hiring a 4×4 Land Rover with full camping gear from our friends at Nomadic Scotland. Your journey begins at their base in Perth, central Scotland, where they will set you up with your own hire car and all the equipment you’ll need. This includes a roof tent and awning, which fit to your vehicle, plus a large bundle, including sleeping bags and pillows, cooking equipment and other useful items. This will allow you the freedom to drive and camp on your road trip, with everything taken care of. They also offer a free itinerary planning service, included with all vehicle hire. So you can get a tailor-made itinerary, taking you to Islay and back, with the best places to visit, places to eat, and good campsites on the route.

A Scottish road trip to Islay
Setting off from Perth, the road takes you west, right across the middle of Scotland. There are around 3.5 hours of driving time to get to Kennacraig ferry port, followed by a 2-hour crossing to Islay. You can take your vehicle across on the ferry, meaning you are free to explore when you get here. In your 4×4, you’ll be ready for all roads and weathers, throughout your journey. You’ll also enjoy extra space, top safety features and a higher driving position to improve visibility on scenic routes.
Along the route, there are plenty of opportunities to stop and camp for the night. You’ll pass through towns and villages such as Crieff, Lochearnhead, Crianlarich, Dalmally, Inveraray, Lochgilphead and Tarbert. Once on Islay, there is much to explore on the island. The main settlements include Bowmore, Port Ellen, Port Charlotte, Port Askaig, Bridgend and Kilchoman. You can visit world-famous whisky distilleries, explore stunning beaches and enjoy wildlife watching. Plus, you MUST come and visit us here at Peatzeria. Our welcoming restaurant in Bowmore is known for delicious wood-fired pizzas and stunning views over Loch Indaal. Our menu features a variety of toppings, including locally inspired options with fresh seafood and Scottish ingredients. With friendly service and a cosy setting, it’s a must-visit for food lovers on the island!

At the end of your Islay visit, you can head back to the mainland on the ferry and then return your vehicle to the hire company in Perth. Or, if you have longer, you may wish to continue the journey to other parts of our magnificent country. Remember, the travel experts at Nomadic Scotland offer an itinerary planning service, so let them know where you want to go and they’ll do all the planning for you!
Please note: We recommend booking your vehicle hire and accommodation early to ensure availability.
